Thought I would start this as we are nearing the traditional time to start thinking about healthier eating ie after the festive goodies have run out...
I've also been thinking about the link between nutrition and management of RA....

These are my favourite healthy alternatives which i think are helpful for RA and for when i need a break / alternative from the christmas cake and after eights!
I do love my chocolate though....!
:-

Banana sandwiches made with brown bread.

Healthy breakfast yogurts - we've been making healthy breakfast bowls of fresh or defrosted frozen fruit layer followed by layer of natural yogurt (i like raspberry flavour at the moment) and topped with strawberry breakfast crunch cereal and more fruit - yummy!

Pumpkin / sunflower seeds / mixed fruit for movie munchies....

Lettuce sandwiches (brown bread again) - apparently they help you sleep....

Banana and milk combo is supposed to help sleep too....

What are other people's healthier options?

Green tea seems to be promoted as a sort of health product these days. I bought some from a Chinese Dr who was treating my shoulder and she said it was also good for aiding weightloss. Not sure about the weightloss - hasn't done me much good yet!!

What do you find the benefits are, Carol?

I do welcome this as when i get bored with food i go off it and end up eating crap cos im famished.

I like roasted pumpkin seeds. What i do is when I am cooking something in the oven I put some in roasting dish with a sprinkle of sea salt for 10 mins adn then empty them into a dish for nibbles. I also buy a big jar of olives and then treat them when i get home, rinse them, pour some olive oil on them and some chopped herbs like basil or corriander and a tinny bit of garlic. i forgot about the pumpkin seeds so I think I will go off and buy some now.

I have been over the christmas addicted to fruit gums but with the weather being so cold it really takes a lot of chewing adn my teeth were traumatised for days when I ate 2 rolls. Blushing I find eating things like satsumas or small bannanas handy when I am in a rush. I have a very sweet tooth so would love ideas to replace my tea and cake as well as savouries to pick at.

Not sure if any of that is healthy but I suppose its healthier than fruitgums! RollEyes

Lizzie,
Crisp subsittues would be home made popcorn, toasted pumpkin seeds - benefits less oily
Breakfast fav: granola, organic yoghurt and fresh fruit (forgot about this too)
Dinners: Cut down on red meat - and eat more veg and fish - good for the soul, body and planet!
Cake subsitute: Confused

For a substitute for potato crisps try Cassava crisps instead or dried banana chips

Stewart I can eat for England and have a stomach like a gannet! - sheep or goat no problemo!!!LOL

Doreen, Maltesers are lovely and low in calories, however, it's what goes into our sweeties that counts, I'm thinking all those E numbers and how it's processed.

Julie, sorry but your list of sweets sounds delicious, but not healthy. Ah.....I'm no saint and pigged out on all sorts this Christmas including Turkish Delight and Bombay mix Blushing

Love,

Barbara

Hi Christine,

My diet was prescribed to me by a doctor in nutrition sort of like Gillian McKeith, but without the quackery.

My Vita-mix blender rules in the kitchen - lots of veg and fruit juices, even kneads dough for homemade bread - great for the old RA handsThumpUp

Love,

Barbara

my problem is I have such a sweet tooth- and I love cheese. I always struggle to give up sweets, cake, chocolate and biscuits- or even to reduce the intake.

Did you get that in Costco Barbara? They're doing it for £387. I see them demonstrating it quite regularly. It looks impressive. It looks good when they bung cabbage in the ice cream and you can't taste it!BigGrin

It puts me off eating sweet things. I can take or leave chocolate, cake, biscuits etc., would rather eat a savoury meal. My weight has been stable (save for this year when I lost in hospital) for 10 years.

Some people say it can fight cancer. I don't know about that and hope I never have to find out. I drink only Green Tea, nothing else and have about 5-6 mugs a day.
